Strengthening Families is a research-informed approach to increase family strengths, enhance child development and reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect. It is based on engaging families, programs, and communities in building five protective factors: Parental Resilience; Social Connections, Knowledge of parenting and child development; Concrete support in times of need; and Social and Emotional competence of children.

  • Explore integration opportunities between Volumes 1, 2, and 3 of the Preschool Learning Foundations.
  • Utilize strategies identified for dual language learners and children with special needs.

  • Become familiar with the CA Preschool Learning Foundations in social-emotional development with a focus on the self-regulation substrand.
  • Understand current research on social-emotional development with connections to brain plasticity and social and academic skills.
  • Connect the foundations to effective strategies in the CA Preschool Curriculum Framework that build positive relationships and support the development of self-regulation skills. This includes:
    -Making smooth transitions between activities
    -Ways adults can help children learn to self-regulate
    -Making a “calm down kit” to use with children in the classroom
